Free meditation classes in London

Updated

Our type of meditation is based on the teachings of Sri Chinmoy, which focus on techniques, such as the spiritual heart. The Sri Chinmoy Centre has been established in London since the early 1970s. We are a group of diverse people brought together through a shared interest in meditation and the spiritual path of Sri Chinmoy.

For over 40 years, we have offered free meditation classes and music to many people who live in London. We welcome you to join us and experience for yourself our approach to meditation.

  • Our classes and workshops combine simple, effective meditation techniques and ancient spiritual wisdom for the modern world.
  • The classes are suitable for beginners and people who wish to make meditation a part of their daily life.
  • In the classes, we offer simple explanations of what meditation involves, and also give you the opportunity to participate in group meditation exercises.

What is meditation?

In meditation, we try to make the mind calm and quiet. By, quelling our restless thoughts, we can become aware of our inner stillness and our inner peace. Meditation is our conscious journey of self-discovery.

How to meditate

We meditate by being aware of the present moment and detaching from the restless thoughts of the mind. We can also use various techniques, such as mantra and visualisation to concentrate on this inner stillness.  See: Getting started with meditation.

“Meditation does not mean just sitting quietly for five or ten minutes. It requires conscious effort. The mind has to be made calm and quiet. At the same time, it has to be vigilant so as not to allow any distracting thoughts or desires to enter. When we can make the mind calm and quiet, we will feel that a new creation is dawning inside us. When the mind is vacant and tranquil and our whole existence becomes an empty vessel, our inner being can invoke infinite peace, light and bliss to enter into the vessel and fill it. This is meditation.” Sri Chinmoy

Devashishu, who offers classes for the London Sri Chinmoy Centre, talks about some of the aspects of meditation.
